WHEN THE LORD BUILDS THE HOUSE...

On August 2nd we sang an old, old hymn, "A Little Brown Church in the Wildwood".  Carolyn Johnson remembers, "…singing with my grandmother....no doubt popular in her day..."
But how many know the story behind the song?

The Little Brown Church was written during the Civil War 1857...  There really is a little brown church in Bradford Iowa near highway 218......William Pitts was traveling in a stage coach that made a rest stop and as William looked over the valley, he thought it would make a nice spot for a church and when he got home composed the words and music and filed it away.... Some years later, he moved to the Bradford area to teach and much to his surprise he saw a church being built in the very spot he had dreamed of.  Times were hard because of the war so they used the cheapest color of paint which was brown....Pitts sang the song at the dedication of the new building in 1862 and sold the manuscript for $25.00....he used the money to enroll in Medical College and spent the rest of his life as the town physician.

Today the church has a membership of about 100 and is known for many weddings, and the thousands of tourists that visit each year.

It is a simple story... of doing what God gives you joy to do and His blessing the little for the future generations.

YOUR LOVE OFFERING IN ACTION!   The Women's Ministry, Jo Ann Snipes and the St. Paul Youth were able to fill twelve (12) filled book bags for Lutheran Services Florida.  Thank you for your generous giving!

$30 A MONTH: how much it costs to keep Fellowship Fellowship is wonderful each Sunday here at St. Paul, when we gather to enjoy some donated goodies and chat for a bit.  Please remember to donate in the little red canister on the fellowship table.  This helps cover the cost of items that are not donated: coffee, creamer, juice, sugar, etc… Enjoy!

HE WHO GATHERS BY LABOR WILL INCREASE!
Proverbs 13:12 The Evangelism Team has been busy!  During the May Swap Meet, they shared the good news to 46 individuals.  That is truly faith in action.  Join them in trusting God for 50 new families.  AND WATCH THE INCREASE!

CHAMPS - FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
CHAMPS Group
supports the church through healthy lifestyle training and information.  If you would like more info on joining or supporting this group, please contact our deaconess, Olga Eckert.  CHAMPS also recommends two new sites for healthy living: www.seniorhealth.about.com and www.healthedco.com.

Here is some St Paul Mission Math: We have an average of the following based on the recording of membership and attendance:

  • Member Families 101
  • Members in total 202
  • Worship per week 57
  • Member attendance 87
  • Families Missing worship 44
  • Members missing worship 88
As part of our Anniversary Mission Program, think about targeting just one of the "missing from worship" families with the power of prayer.  See John Graff for a list.  Most people come to church because they have been asked.  Prayerfully consider taking a name to:
  • 1. Pray for
  • 2. Invite to church
Calling to ask them if they have any concerns that they would like the church to help with might be the step that they need to get them back to worship.

WATCH THAT LOCOMOTIVE
Our thanks to the CPTA for the new playground equipment at St Paul Preschool. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, the St Paul School CPTA has purchased a play piece in the shape of a locomotive. We, parents at St Paul Church would like to thank the parents at St Paul school for this wonderful gift. Thanks also to several men who donated their time in taking down the old equipment to make room for this addition.

The National LWML April Mites of $33,000.00 are designated for the El Comedor Popular Soup Kitchen at St. Matt. Lutheran Church in the west side of Chicago where there is much unemployment and many homeless.  Before meals the pastor shares devotions and prayers to nourish the soul of the hungry.
